Monday

Today is another good day!  We went in to see Mom and she was wide awake.  She doesn't always make sense and gets confused at times but that can be attributed to pain meds and being on a ventilator for 17 days.

We were able to visit and she was laughing at stories we told and was even able to tell a few.  Her voice is real soft and raspy and she gets short of breath and tired but again it's only day 3 off the vent.

Some really encouraging things happened today. PT/OT came in so that makes me happy! Mom was able to sit at the edge of bed without assistance and stand for a few seconds with assistance. When OT came in they tested her swallowing and she told the therapist she wanted ice cream.  He brought her some chocolate ice cream and she ate the cup full without any problems. We were all really happy about that but no one more happy than Mom herself.  The OT is going to try and see if we can progress to mashed potatoes and other pureed foods tomorrow.  We are making progress.

Speaking of progress, I spoke to the radiation oncologist today and another oncologist will also be evaluating Mom after hours today.  Now that her trachea (windpipe) has been stabilized we can get on with the business of going after this cancer which is what we all hoped for.  Per the doctors, this will be a rollercoaster ride but one we are all prepared to ride, including Mom who now has a renewed fight in her.

Thanks for all your prayers and continued support.

Love to all,
Heidi & Bob
